These land examination reports were prepared by CPR's Land Inspectors, and include the following elements (not necessarily all of them in any single report), which helped the railway determine the value of the land, and what price they should charge for it: average grade; nearest railway station; elevators; nationality of nearest settlers; type of farming in district; nearest creamery, post office, school, church; average rainfall; area of arable land; soil type; timber cover; surface water and well depth; grass and hay cover; stone and coal in district; improvements made; and general remarks.

The fonds consists of Ernest Brookes’s certificate of award of the Military Medal; documentation of his acquisition of land from the Soldier Settlement Board; his marriage certificate; invoices and receipts; his application for employment with the Civil Service of Canada; his portrait (ca. 1910); snapshot of his sister’s family (Mrs. Arthur Gyatt of Hussar, Alberta, ca. 1920s); and a snapshot of Ernest, Emily, and Alice Brookes (ca. 1930s).

The collection consists of drafts of St. Ann Ranch Book I and Book II; research material and copies of photographs relating to the St. Ann Ranch Trading Co. and the history of Trochu, Alberta; feasibility study and publicity relating to the designations of the St. Ann Ranch as an historic site and development of a bed and breakfast and teahouse; biographical information on Louis and Lorene Frere.
