Biographical history
Joseph Tyas, 1857-1952, was born in England. He migrated to South Africa, then Australia, and finally Canada. He arrived in Alberta in 1902, and filed for a homestead in a district known as “The Buttes”, east of Balzac. His wife Minnie Pauline and eldest son Roy joined him later that year. They were successful in establishing the farm, and Joseph was appointed a Justice of the Peace, but apparently they only remained in the district for a few years. His burial took place at Pickering, Ontario. Joseph and Minnie had at least four sons, Roy, Alfred, David and Philip.
