Consists of 114 photographs and 4 drawings compiled by Ron Henderson of the Samuel Atlantic Skead residence at 712 12 Avenue SW, Calgary. The house was designed in 1906 and demolished in 1983 or 1984. The photographs document the house, interior and exterior, prior to and during the demolition. The drawings were created in 1983 showing plans and elevations of the house as it was in 1906 and 1983.

The Glengarry School was gutted by fire in 1979 and subsequently levelled by the City of Calgary.

There are two files of portfolios and pamphlets that document the history of the Stevenson Raines architectural firm. The fonds has been divided into four series: 1. School of Architecture Committee; 2. White Paper on Tax Reform and Proposed Architectural Department City of Calgary; 3. Prairie Rural Housing Committee; and 4. Additional Donations.

The fonds consists of architectural drawings and specifications for the Vista Heights housing project, completed in 1982 for Calhome Properties, a subsidiary of the City of Calgary. The fonds also includes the early CAD software and manuals used to design the project. In the early 1980s, McDougall Architects acquired the CAD system Touch ‘n Draw developed by Arrigoni Computer Graphics for the Tektronix 4050 series of computer hardware. McDougall Architects’ Vista Heights project was believed to be the first residential architectural project created in western Canada using CADD (computer aided design and drafting).

Fonds consists of records documenting the production of Jim Hamm’s documentary Radical Attitudes: The Architecture of Douglas Cardinal. The records include 48 raw footage videotapes of interviews and shots of Cardinal’s architectural work. Interviewees include Douglas Cardinal, Arthur Erickson, Jane Gehring, (Cardinal firm General Manager), Satish Rao (Senior Architect for Cardinal for 30 years), and Benjamin Forgey (architecture critic at Washington Post). Footage of architectural projects include several of Cardinal’s buildings in Alberta, Ottawa-Gatineau, Washington, and Regina. Also included in the fonds are production masters of the documentary, copies of Cardinal footage from CBC, copies of footage relating to the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, and time-lapse film footage of Cardinal’s work. The fonds includes several CD-Rs containing copies of images of Cardinal’s work. There is a small volume of textual records created in the production of the documentary, including releases, cue sheets, and broadcasting letters. The records provide insight into the work of Douglas Cardinal and the production of Hamm’s award-winning documentary.

Fonds consists of records documenting the architectural career of architect Fred Valentine. The records consist of project files created and maintained by Valentine that contain photographs, publicity, correspondence, architectural drawings, and project reports. The files are arranged alphabetically by Valentine with several general files at the end. Also included are six video recordings and one cassette that feature interviews with Valentine. The majority of Valentine’s architectural drawings were transferred to Stantec Architecture, accordingly they are not part of his fonds at the CAA.

Collection consists of records documenting the freelance architectural career of architect Oliver Botar Sr. There are 129 architectural drawings documenting his freelance projects, including two condominium projects in Edmonton, his design of the Supercrane 8000, the Grassland Community Library, and the Danny Gaudet Residence. Also included are the project drawings for several works for the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, including the school, administrative building, and home for seniors. There are also seven photographs of his air traffic control towers and a file documenting his work for the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. Also included is a biography of Oliver Botar Sr. written by Oliver Botar Jr. and Gabor Botar. The archival materials have been divided into three series: 1. Drawings; 2. Files; 3. Photographs.

Fonds consists of 149 architectural drawings from the architectural practice of H.M. & W.A. Whiddington, Whiddington & Fry, and H.M. Whiddington. H.M. Whiddington was one of the main architects in Lethbridge in the period from 1910 to 1930. The fonds documents several projects, largely in Lethbridge, but also in Edmonton, Coaldale, and Baron, Alberta, and Cranbrook and Princeton, British Columbia. The drawings include architectural plans for several important early buildings in Lethbridge, such as the Wesley Church, the Manual Training School, the Exhibition Building, Galbraith Street School, Bank of Montreal, and St. Patrick’s Catholic School. The fonds has been divided into three series: 1. H.M. & W.A. Whiddington, 2. Whiddington & Fry, and 3. H.M. Whiddington.

Boak Alexander Highway 86 drawings

Collection consists of 193 architectural drawings created in 1984 and 1985 for the SITE Highway 86 installation at Expo ’86 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The drawings were maintained by Boak Alexander as the local architect of record for the lead designer SITE, a New York City-based architectural firm founded and led by James Wines. Highway 86 was a 217 meter-long sculptural installation that celebrated the history of 20th-century transportation, featuring replicas of over 200 vehicles. The drawings document the design and construction of the installation. Following Expo ’86, the installation was dismantled and sold.

Consists of 15 reprographic copies of drawings of the Calgary Normal School from between 1908 and 1915 by architect A. M. Jeffers for the province of Alberta department of public works. The original drawings are held at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. The Calgary Normal School was among the first major public works built in the province. It was later renamed McDougall School in 1922. Also included are 8 reprographic copies of as built drawings of McDougall School by provincial department of public works architect Max Kattenburg for a renovation project in 1981. In 1981 the school was decommissioned and renovated into a provincial government office and meeting space.

Records in the collection include copies of drawings, photographs, a model, a presentation book, and magazine articles for the Edmonton residence, and copies of drawings, construction photographs, and documentation of the building permit dispute for the Calgary residence. The collection has been divided into two series: 1. Edmonton residence; and 2. Calgary residence.

The architectural projects span his work at the Sturgess Partnership (1978-1987), Sturgess Architects, Ltd. (1987-1993), and Sturgess Architecture (1993-present). Among the notable projects represented are Banff Town Hall, Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel, Yukon Visitor Reception Centre, Calgary Water Centre, 7th Avenue LRT Masterplan & Station Refurbishment, The Bridges Masterplan/Bridgeland Community Centre/Olive, Connaught Gardens, Alberta Pavilion Expo 86, House on Bowen Island, Naidoo/McLaughlan Residence, Assured Beltline, Spiral House, the Block, Borden Residence, and many others. The majority of the fonds consists of project records, including architectural drawings, notes, correspondence, minutes, specifications, reports, and photographs. Notable projects documented in the fonds include the Carleton School of Architecture, Wayland Drew House, Expo 67 Bandshells, Girl Guides of Canada Headquarters, Vestmannaeyjar Plan and Municipal Works Projects, Wintergreen Building, Icelandic Concert House, McMullen Cottage, and OPSEU Headquarters. The fonds also includes twenty-three student drawings by the Corneils and a small volume of professional records, including photographs of Carmen at the 1993 Governor General awards ceremony in Vancouver and the catalogue for the Corneils’ Storm Windows exhibition. The fonds has been divided into three series: 1. Student records; 2. Professional records; and, 3. Project records.
