Biographical history
Edwin "Ted" Raines was born in Ystrad Mynach, Wales, on 12 December 1923. He moved to Manitoba, Canada with his family when he was three years old. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from the School of Architecture at the University of Manitoba in 1947. He remained as a lecturer in architecture at the University of Manitoba until 1952. Raines married Nancy Kennedy in 1951 and they have two children, Doug and Libby. In 1952 Raines began working as Research Architect at the Research Group at Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation (Ottawa, 1952-1954). In 1954 he became Chief Architect of Rupertsland Trading Company in Winnipeg, overseeing the design and construction of Hudson Bay Company stores across Canada. Raines moved to Calgary and joined the firm J. Stevenson and Associates as a design architect in 1957. He became partner in the firm in 1966 when it was renamed Stevenson Raines Barrett Hutton Seton & Partners. From 1980 to retirement in 1985 he was senior partner in the firm under the name Raines Finlayson Barrett & Partners. The firm designed numerous schools and hospitals across southern Alberta. Notable projects include the Calgary International Airport, Mount Royal College, MacEwan Hall, Red Deer College, Lethbridge Correctional Institute, and the Calgary Centre for Performing Arts. Raines became a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and President of the Alberta Association of Architects in 1969. In 1965 he was appointed chairman of the Alberta Association of Architects’ committee studying the need for a school of architecture in Alberta and from 1967 to 1968 chairman of the advisory committee on site selection for a school of architecture in Alberta. Ted Raines died in Calgary on 12 February 2009.

Fonds was donated to the Canadian Architectural Archives by Ted Raines in 1983 and 1984. Additional materials (accession 2025.05) were maintained by Ted Raines's daughter Libby Raines following Ted Raines's death and until they were donated to the CAA by Libby Raines on February 3, 2025.

Scope and content
Fonds consists of correspondence, reports, portfolios, pamphlets, and newspaper clippings created or maintained by Ted Raines from 1947 to 2002. The records document his activities in the establishment of a School of Architecture in the province of Alberta, the appointment of a City Architect at the City of Calgary, federal tax reform in 1969, the Prairie Rural Housing Committee at the University of Manitoba, and the design of the Calgary Internation Airport. There are two files of portfolios and pamphlets that document the history of the Stevenson Raines architectural firm. The fonds has been divided into four series: 1. School of Architecture Committee; 2. White Paper on Tax Reform and Proposed Architectural Department City of Calgary; 3. Prairie Rural Housing Committee; and 4. Additional Donations.
