Biographical history

Leonard D. Nesbitt, 1888-1969, was born in Lisburne, County Down, Ireland and came to Calgary from Lindsay, Ontario in 1910. He was a journalist and worked for many papers including the Calgary Albertan and the Calgary Herald. In 1912, he bought the Bassano News, started the Langdon Leader and took over the Brooks Bulletin. In the same year, he married Gail Amelia Huffman, and they had four children: Clive, 1913-1981, James, 1914-2005, Lee, 1917-?, Donna (Randall), 1928-2002.

Between 1926 and 1955 he was the Superintendent of Publicity for the Alberta Wheat Pool. In 1927 he instituted radio broadcasts and later was the editor of the Wheat Pool Budget. During this period he wrote extensively on all phases of western agriculture, and was closely associated with the United Farmers of Alberta (UFA) and Henry Wise Wood. He retired in 1955.

In 1960, he was commissioned by the Alberta Wheat Pool to write its history, Tides in the West. - Saskatoon : Modern Press, 1962.

The fonds consists of personal papers; correspondence, articles, and news releases produced while AWP publicity director (1926-1955); recorded interview about life; and patriotic, recruiting and war bond posters from the Second World War.
