        History

        George Lane was born near Des Moines, Iowa, USA. He lived in Kansas and Montana before moving to Alberta in 1884. He was foreman of the North West Cattle Company's ranch, the Bar U, near Pekisko. In 1892 he purchased the Flying E Ranch on Willow Creek and in 1897 he established the YT Ranch on the Little Bow. He was involved in raising livestock, breeding Percheron horses, farming and meatpacking. His business ventures included partnerships with Pat Burns and the firm of Gordon Ironsides & Fares. In 1902 he became owner of the Bar U Ranch. In 1913 he was elected to the Alberta Legislature but resigned before taking his seat. He was well known as one of the "Big Four" founders of the first Calgary Stampede in 1912. He was host to Edward, Prince of Wales during his 1919 visit to Alberta. Lane was inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1963. He married Elizabeth, 1866-1958, in 1885. She was born in Quebec and moved to High River Crossing, Alberta in 1883. She served as president of the women's section of the Southern Alberta Pioneers' and Old Timers' Association. The Lanes had eight children, Lillian (Everett), Mable (Paulin), Ernest, Roy, Elsie (Gordon), Mildred (Day), Clifton and George.
