Beginning of reading on sound recording. Discussion topics include John Metcalf's use of name David, attitudes towards sex in England, class structure in England, amount of time John Metcalf spends writing a short story, source of his material and the value of studying literature. John Metcalf also reads short story Pretty Boy followed by discussion. Topics include the subversive, political nature of fiction; significance of titles; religion in John Metcalf's short stories; remuneration for writing; how John Metcalf started writing; cooperation among writers; value of writing workshops; imagery in short story Robert, Standing; autobiography in Going Down Slow; teaching of creative writing; and the value of criticism, particularly from other writers. Questions from audience often difficult to hear. John Metcalf introduced by Doug Rollins, who also participated in discussion. Discussion continued on sound recording.
