Biographical history
Born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1955, Mark Anthony Jarman is a prolific Canadian author, editor and teacher. His notable works include the short story collections, 19 Knives, My White Planet, and Czech Techno; the travel book, Ireland’s Eye and the novel, Salvage King Ya!.
During his career, Jarman has been a frequent nominee or recipient of many literary awards. Among his wins are a Gold National Magazine award, The Jack Hodgins Fiction Prize, the Maclean-Hunter Endowment Award (twice) and the Relit prize. His work has appeared in the Journey Prize Anthology, the Best Canadian Short Stories, and was shortlisted for Best American essays, and the O. Henry Prize. A.S. Byatt, writing in The Guardian in 2007, called one of Jarman’s short stories, “Burn Man on a Texan Porch”, possibly “the greatest story ever”.
Jarman currently lives in Fredericton where he teaches at the University of New Brunswick and is fiction editor at The Fiddlehead literary journal.
