Dr. Robert (Bob) Edgar Hatfield was born in 1929. He attended the University of Alberta where he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Medicine. His internship was completed at the University of Alberta Hospital in 1953-1954. Dr. Hatfield obtained his Master of Science in Medicine from the University of Minnesota in 1960 and was made a member of the Alumni Association of the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research.

In 1955, Dr. Hatfield became a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta; he was appointed a life member in 1966. Dr. Hatfield became a part-time assistant professor in the Division of Medicine at the University of Calgary in 1971 and became a part-time associate professor with the Department of Medicine in 1982. In 1980, he co-founded Hospice Calgary for which he was chair of the board for 10 years. From 1985 until his retirement in 1996 he was clinical associate professor. During his years of teaching at the university, he worked at the Foothills Hospital.

Bob Hatfield's main interests were palliative care and the Humour Project. He did a great deal of research on both areas, creating files containing such things as cartoons, cards, anecdotes, etc. and being involved with the Palliative Care Program Committee at the Foothills Hospital. Dr. Hatfield was involved in a wide variety of activities throughout his life - from the Tuxis Parliament in Alberta (1945, 1947) and the university mixed chorus at the University of Alberta as an undergraduate, to the Calgary Jacees (Junior Chamber of Commerce) which voted him citizen of the year in 1970. He received the University of Calgary honorary degree in 1995. Dr. Hatfield passed away early 1999.
