Biographical history

Omar Junio Broughton, 1918-1997, was born near Donalda, Alberta and served with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) during the Second World War. He received a degree in agriculture from the University of Alberta, graduating in 1950 and later took business administration at Harvard. In 1950 he joined CJOC radio in Lethbridge, Alberta as a farm commentator. In 1957 he moved to the Alberta Wheat Pool, later becoming corporate secretary. In 1972 he became a marketing commissioner for Alberta Agriculture, retiring in 1983 to a farm near High River. He was very active with numerous historical organizations including Friends of the Bar U, Alberta Historic Sites Board, and the Alberta Geographical Names Board. He and his wife, Anne, 1921-1998, had three sons, Barrie, Lindsay and Timothy.

The fonds consists of CJOC related records; military papers; records pertaining to his Alberta Wheat Pool career; Friends of the Bar U records; and oral history interviews done with early ranchers. Includes photographs of military and broadcasting activities.
