Biographical history
Gregory John Levin (March 8, 1943-) was a composer, conductor, pianist and teacher who was born in Washington, D.C. Levin graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University in 1967, a Master of Fine Arts from Brandeis University in 1969 and a PH.D. from Brandeis in 1975. Levin moved to Canada to teach theory and composition at the University of Calgary. He became a naturalized Canadian in 1989.
Over his career, Levin received many commission including "Flowers of Padua" for the Calgary Philharmonic and "Spiral Staircase" for the Calgary Institute for the Humanities. One of his works "Crossroads" won the Viotti Prize in Vercelli, Itlay in 1975 when it was premiered by James Campbell. Levin was interested in Indigenous culture which is reflected in his opera "Ghost Dance" (1985) which used Sioux songs and was written about the last years of Sioux Chief Sitting Bull.
