Biographical history
Ernest George Hansell, 1895-1965, was born in England and moved to Reston, Manitoba with his family in 1904. The family moved to Calgary in 1911. In 1917 he became a cartoonist for the Calgary News Telegram. He married Alice Edwards of New York, USA the same year, and they had two children, Ruth (Bodie) and Harry. Ernest was ordained as a minister in 1920 and was called to Westbourne Baptist Church in Calgary in 1922. It was here that his connection with Social Credit began. He subsequently served as minister at the Camrose Baptist Church, Hillhurst Baptist Church in Calgary, and at the Church of Christ in Vulcan.
In 1931 he married his second wife, Hilda Maeers Langille of Calgary, and they had two children, William and Elizabeth. He was elected to the House of Commons as the Social Credit member for Macleod in 1935. He sat in the House until 1958. From 1959 to 1963 he sat in the Alberta Legislature as the Social Credit member for Okotoks-High River.
