Biographical history

Donald B. Smith, 1946- , was born in Oakville, Ontario. He is a graduate of Universite Laval and the University of Toronto. He joined the Department of History at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta in 1974 and is now professor emeritus. He is a specialist in Canadian native studies and has published several books on the subject, including Long Lance : The True Story of an Imposter; Sacred Feathers : The Reverend Peter Jones (Kahkewaquonaby) and the Mississauga Indians; From the Land of the Shadows : The Making of Grey Owl, and Calgary's Grand Story. He married Nancy Townshend in 1982 and they have two sons.

The fonds consists of his research material, correspondence, recorded interviews and photographs pertaining to his books about Long Lance (Sylvester Clark Long); Grey Owl; and the Lougheed Building and Grand Theatre; and his articles about John Laurie, Honore Joseph Jaxon, the Herchmer family, Annie Glen Broder and the Steinhauer family. Includes copies of John Laurie, Long Lance and Grey Owl personal and family papers from a wide variety of private sources; television and radio programs regarding Grey Owl.
