Fonds F0163 - William Stanley Bates fonds

William Stanley Bates, 1872-1949, was born in Yorkshire, England. In 1897 he became an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He moved to Calgary in 1904 and joined the architectural firm of Wilson, Hodgson and Bates. He subsequently worked for Hodgson and Bates; Hodgson, Bates and Butler; and Hodgson, Bates and Beattie before establishing his own fim in 1916. He designed many prominent Calgary buildings including the Burns block, Grain Exchange, Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) Natural Resources building, Sacred Heart church, and parts of the Holy Cross hospital. He also designed houses, schools, churches, hotels, hospitals, banks and commercial buildings which were erected in Calgary and southern Alberta towns. He was a charter member of the Alberta Society of Architects. He and his wife had four children, Cynthia (Aikenhead), Maxwell, Newton and William.
