Biographical history
Before University autonomy, matters relating to public relations on campus were the responsibility of an Information Officer (ca. 1964). By 1977 the Department of Information had been formed to handle public relations. The name was changed in 1981 to the Information Office, and in 1982 to the Public Affairs Office in the Office of Community Relations. In 1998, it became University Communications. Around 2014, it was renamed Strategic Communications, reporting to the Vice-President (University Relations).
The Public Affairs Office, later University Communications and Strategic Communications, is responsible for gathering and disseminating information about the University to the public and the news media on a continuing basis, and facilitating communication within the university community through the publication of newsletters, online news publications, and daily website updates.
The University Gazette was first published as The University of Calgary's general campus newsletter in 1967. After two issues, it was called simply The Gazette. Other newsletters which preceded The Gazette included Quid Novi, Faculty Gazette, UAC Bulletin, and Staff Gazette. Another publication, The University Report, was a quarterly publication of University news published ca.1967-1969.
