Penrose Melvin Sauder, 1882-1971, was born near Galt, Ontario. He graduated from the University of Toronto in mechanical engineering and came to Alberta in 1904 as a survey engineer for the federal Department of the Interior. He married Florence Aylward, 1881-1976, in 1910, and they had three children, Joseph A., 1914-, Fred J., 1916-, and Mary-Lazelle (Harvie), 1926-.
He joined the Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District in 1920, was project manager from 1925 to 1939 and official trustee of the district, 1939-1965. From 1940 to 1944 he was director of the provincial Water Resources Branch and from 1944 to 1946 was manager of the Western Irrigation District at Strathmore. In 1946 he was appointed general manager of the St. Mary-Milk Rivers Development and in 1950 became the colonization manager for the district. He retired from SMRD in 1960.
He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Alberta, Calgary campus, in 1963. He was very active in the Association of Professional Engineers of Alberta and the Engineering Institute of Canada. He was inducted into the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1972.
