History
Archibald “Archie” Read, 1883-[after 1972], was born in London, England and apprenticed as a stonemason. He emigrated to Canada in 1904, first to Montreal, then in 1909 to southern Alberta where he worked as a stone cutter at Quinlan’s sandstone quarry at Glenbow, near Cochrane. The Reads moved to Calgary in 1911 where Archie worked for the Shelley Quarry Company. He served in the 8th Field Ambulance during the First World War, and on his return worked at the Colonel Belcher Hospital. From 1920 to 1935 he farmed at Consort, and then in 1935 returned to Cochrane to work at Bill Oliver’s quarry. He and his wife had at least three children, including Glen, the first child born in Glenbow, Alberta.
