Biographical history

Peter L. Naismith, 1865-[after 1947], was born in Pembroke, Ontario. He studied civil engineering at McGill University, and gained field experience in Wyoming, 1891-1892. He married Annie S. McCormack in 1891 and they had two sons, Andrew M. and Peter L., Jr. He was superintendent of railways and shipping for the Dominion Coal Company in Cape Breton, 1893-1900. In 1900 he came to Alberta as manager of the Alberta Railway and Coal Company, which later became the Alberta Railway and Irrigation Company. When Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) took over the company in 1912 and created the Department of Natural Resources, Naismith became the general manager. He remained in this position until 1927. He was active in the Calgary Rotary Club and Board of Trade. He retired to Victoria. His son, Lt.-Col. Andrew M. Naismith, 1894-1966, served in the First World War, practiced law in Calgary for 25 years, and was one of the first directors of the Calgary Stampede.

The fonds consists of miscellaneous irrigation correspondence and maps; a letter and memo re stockmen and cattle rustlers in Wyoming (Banditti of the Plains); scrapbook of newsclippings about early Calgary history and the Galt family; photograph album of the 1904 Galt irrigation canal system; and postcards of the Calgary Stampede and a photograph of Andrew Naismith.
