Fonds F1032 - Norman B. James fonds

Norman B. James, 1872-1963, was born in England, came to Halifax with his family in 1893, and soon after came west. He worked as a cowboy near Calgary for a number of years and then moved to Lethbridge where he met and married Henrietta, ?-1964, in 1899. They had two children, Muriel and Harold. Norman served with the forces overseas in First World War, returned to Youngstown, Alberta in 1919, then went to Northern Ontario and worked for five years as a construction worker. He returned to the west and started farming on Soldier Settlement Board land near Youngstown. He became interested in William Aberhart's plans for social and economic reform and sat as a Social Credit Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), 1935-1948. He published a book entitled The Autobiography of a Nobody in 1947 and wrote a regular column called "Mainstreet" in the Social Credit publication Today and Tomorrow for a number of years.
