Biographical history

Max Bishop, 1878-1952, was born in England, and moved to Canada in 1903. He worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in Montreal and in the grain business in Winnipeg before moving to Calgary in 1912. He worked for the Independent Grain Company until 1927, when he joined the Alberta Wheat Pool. Max's interests included poetry, horticulture, music and drama, and he belonged to the Paget Players, Calgary Little Theatre Association, Calgary Light Opera Society, and many other theatrical and musical organizations. He and his wife, Alice Thirza Payne, 1885-1968, who was also from England, had one daughter, Dulcie (Payne), 1913-1994. Dulcie was also very active in the Calgary musical community.

The fonds consists of scrapbooks (programs and newsclippings) pertaining to theatrical and musical events (1894-1948), photographs of the family, theatrical productions, Calgary and the Rockies (1920s-1940s), and miscellaneous scripts, poetry, and sheet music.
