He worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in Montreal and in the grain business in Winnipeg before moving to Calgary in 1912. He worked for the Independent Grain Company until 1927, when he joined the Alberta Wheat Pool. Max's interests included poetry, horticulture, music and drama, and he belonged to the Paget Players, Calgary Little Theatre Association, Calgary Light Opera Society, and many other theatrical and musical organizations.
