Biographical history

Louise Collins Dean, 1895-1987, was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. She taught school in Saskatchewan for a number of years, and in 1920 moved to Calgary, Alberta with her husband, Zerah W. Dean, ?-1954. They had two daughters, Bernice (Stansfield), 1922-1997, and Dixie-Anne (Montgomery). Louise was very active in local organizations including the Good Cheer Club, Women's Canadian Club, Beta Sigma Phi, YMCA Red Triangle Hostess Club, and the Calgary Volunteer Society. She served as a public school board trustee, 1937-1938, was one of the founders of Calgary's first Birth Control Society in the 1930s, was involved with the Calgary General Hospital Women's Auxiliary for over thirty years, and worked with the Social Planning Council. A school for unwed mothers was named after her, and in 1977 she was honoured as the Jaycees Citizen of the Year.

The fonds consists of personal correspondence, newsclippings, programs, scrapbooks regarding her involvement in local clubs and other activities, and a recorded interview of her reminiscences. Includes a souvenir booklet and newsclippings about Nellie McClung.
