Oliver Stanley Longman, 1889-1966, was born in Carnduff, Saskatchewan. In 1913 he graduated in agriculture from the University of Manitoba. From 1913 to 1917 he taught in Alberta at the Claresholm and Olds Agricultural Schools. In 1917 he married Edith Lizzie Barber, 1895-1979, and they had two daughters, Eileen Doris (Steele) and Mildred Winnifred (Spencer). They farmed in Manitoba, 1917-1919, then returned to Alberta where O.S. was principal of the Raymond School of Agriculture, 1920-1931.

He then investigated Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) irrigation projects and the drought conditions in southern Alberta for the Alberta government, 1931-1932. He worked as the farm manager for the Colonization Finance Corporation of Canada in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, 1932-1934. From 1934 to 1942 he was the Field Crops Commissioner for Alberta. He then served as Deputy Minister of Agriculture from 1942 until his retirement in 1955. From 1956 until his death he worked as a researcher for the Glenbow Foundation, gathering information on agriculture and irrigation, largely from Gazettes, Sessional Papers, Hansard and government reports. In 1960 he and Edith moved to New Westminster, British Columbia.
