Biographical history

Alfred Rawlins, 1883-1965, was born near Salisbury, England. He emigrated to the USA in 1903, and worked on ranches in Michigan and Nebraska before moving to Alberta in 1906. He farmed for one year near Taber, then homesteaded at Turin in 1908. He was a founding member of the Alberta Farmers' Cooperative Elevator Company in 1913. The company amalgamated with the Grain Growers' Grain Company in 1917 to become the United Grain Growers. He actively promoted improvement of Canada's grain marketing system, and in 1937 presented a brief to the Turgeon Royal Commission on Grain. He was secretary of the Bow River Drought Area and Retlaw Agricultural Improvement Association. He sold the farm in 1945 and retired to White Rock, British Columbia.
