      Note

Mitchell Canadian landscape painter and watercolour artist Janet Mitchell was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, on November 24, 1912. She moved to Calgary as an infant after being adopted by a Calgary couple. Attended schools in Calgary including evening classes at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (now the Alberta College of Art and Design), and won a scholarship to the Banff School of Fine Arts in 1942. She was largely self-taught, however, and had her first one-person show in Toronto in 1949; she continued to exhibit across Canada, in Britain, Japan and U.S.A. and is represented in many public and private collections. Winner of many awards, she was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1977. An active member of the Alberta art community for many years, she died in Calgary in 1998. For additional biographical information, see Janet Mitchell: life and art / by Peggy Armstrong. - Winnipeg: Hyperion Press, 1990.
