Leslie Rowland, 1917-1993, was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, was educated in Winnipeg and graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in law in 1941. He joined Stovel Press in Winnipeg in 1947 as editor of the magazine Canadian Finance. He developed the magazine Oil in Canada in 1948 with Carl O. Nickle, and was editor until Oil in Canada merged with Oilweek in September 1963, when Maclean-Hunter acquired both magazines. At that time, he continued as an editor of Oilweek. From 1961 onwards, Mr. Rowland was a resident of Calgary. He was a member of many societies, including the Law Society of Manitoba, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the Historical Society of Alberta, the Archaeological Society of Alberta, the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Writers, and the Society for Technical Communication. He was an honorary member of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (Calgary Branch), the Petroleum Accountants Society of Western Canada and the Engineering Institute of Canada. In addition, he was a member of the board of management of the Wesley United Church of Calgary. He never married. In 1998 Rowland was inducted into the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame.
