Biographical history
John Stewart, 1854-1893, was the son of William Stewart, 1803-1856, an Ottawa, Ontario merchant and politician. John and his brothers, McLeod, 1847-1926, and Archibald were the major investors in the Canadian Anthracite Coal Company (later Canmore Mines) which developed mines at Anthracite and Canmore, Alberta. John lived in Calgary, Alberta. McLeod remained in Ottawa.
