Biographical history

John Thomas Schmidt, 1923-2005, was born in Ayr, Ontario. He worked as a linotype operator at his family's newspaper, the Ayr News, did some farming, and worked for the Kitchener-Waterloo Record and the Hamilton Spectator. In 1958 he moved to Calgary and became an agricultural reporter for the Calgary Herald. He wrote the column "Agricultural Alberta" until 1986 when the Herald discontinued it. He and his wife, Margaret, later moved to Chancellor, Alberta. In 1989 he published Growing up in the Oil Patch, a history of oil well drillers.

The fonds consists of John Schmidt's agricultural columns and articles (1959-1982) [microfiche], manuscript and photographs for his Growing Up in the Oil Patch, and reference files. Includes photographs of Hutterites in Alberta, Alberta oil wells (1906-1940), Alaska highway construction (1943-1944); and a copy of the diary of Canol surveyor Guy Blanchet (1943).
