Biographical history

James Hogarth, 1879-1969, was born in Scotland. He joined the British Army in 1894, and served with the King's Own Scottish Border Regiment in the South African War. He came to Calgary, Alberta in 1910. During First World War he served with the 56th (Calgary) Infantry Battalion. He was one of the original members of the Calgary Highlanders, formed in 1921. He rose to the rank of major and was quartermaster of the Highlanders during the Second World War. In civilian life he was a carpenter, and was employed by A.B. Cushing Mills for 44 years. He married Hannah Isabella Goodfellow in 1912 and they had two daughters.

The fonds consists of army paybooks (1917-1918), field service pocket book (1932), military certificates (1923-1931), photographs of the Calgary Highlanders (1920s-1945), and souvenir programs.
