Biographical history

John T. “Jack” Sparrow, 1928-2015, was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta. In 1944, he started his career with the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) as a steam locomotive Wiper Fireman in Medicine Hat. The next year he became a Locomotive Fireman, working between Medicine Hat and Calgary, Alberta. From 1952 until 1971, he was a Locomotive Engineer working out of Calgary. In 1971, he was promoted to Road Foreman of Engines and in 1974 was made Acting Assistant Superintendent. Later that year, he was transferred to Montreal and assumed the position of Labour Relations Officer – Industrial Relations. In 1977, he was promoted to Manager of Labour Relations – Industrial Relations and he held this position until he retired in 1985. On December 29, 1949, Jack Sparrow was the fireman on one of two Canadian Pacific Railway trains which collided at Southesk, 16 miles west of Brooks, Alberta. Three people were killed in the accident and 68 injured.

The fonds consists of statements, depositions, newspaper coverage and correspondence relating to Canadian Pacific Railway accident at Southesk and miscellaneous other train accidents in Alberta; Canadian Pacific Railway, Alberta District Locomotive Firemen and Engineers’ seniority lists (1908-1985); and Canadian Pacific Railway, Alberta District timetables. Includes one Canadian National Railway, Alberta Area employee operating timetable (1971).
