Biographical history

Herbert Marshall Welch, 1888-1951, was born in Ashton-under-Line, Lancashire, England and emigrated to Canada in 1906. He joined a friend, John Ardern, in Millarville, Alberta and worked on various ranches. He also carried the mail for a period of time between Calgary and Millarville. About 1909 he moved to Calgary and in 1912 married Margaret, 1889-1975. He served in the First World War and on his return became an x-ray technician at the Colonel Belcher Hospital in Calgary where he worked for thirty years. He and his wife had three children, Nora (Law), Marshall T., and John Leonard.

The fonds consists of photographs of work on the Copithorne Ranch, mail stages, his wedding, trip to Vancouver (1910), the Stampede (1912), Calgary horse show (1912) and camping (1923). Includes poster advertising the Calgary-Millarville mail stage (1906).
