Biographical history
George Brinton McClellan, 1908-1982, was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He graduated from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario in 1930 and joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) at Vancouver in 1932. He served in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, Ontario and British Columbia. In the 1940s he headed RCMP security services in several provinces and then in 1947 became the Director of Security and Intelligence for all of Canada. He was involved in espionage cases, and safe-guarded Russian defector Igor Gouzenko, who had unveiled a Soviet spy ring in Canada.
He was Commissioner of the Force from 1963 to 1967, during which time the controversial Dorion Commission and the Gerda Munsinger scandal took place. In 1967 he was appointed Ombudsman for the Province of Alberta, the first Legislative Ombudsman in North America. He retired from this position in 1974 and then chaired the Alberta Rent Regulation Appeal Board from 1976 to 1978. He received honorary doctorates from the Royal Military College in 1976 and from the University of Alberta in 1978. He married Elizabeth Austin in 1941 and they had three daughters, Barbara, 1945- , Margaret, 1947- , and Miriam, 1950- .
