Biographical history

Norman Frederick "Fred" Bell, 1891-1983, was born in Ontario and came to Vermilion, Alberta in 1906. He studied agriculture at the Vermilion School of Agriculture and University of Alberta, graduating in 1919. That same year he married Mary Peacock, a descendant of the Barge family, and they farmed near Islay, Alberta. In 1928 he was appointed Supervisor of Illustration Stations at Scotton, Saskatchewan. Between 1944 and his retirement in 1959 he worked as a district agriculturalist, first in Drumheller, Alberta and in Calgary in 1952. During this time he was active in the 4H clubs. After his retirement he began researching his family history. In 1979 he was made a member of the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame. The Bells had a son, Arthur.

The fonds consists of certificates presented to Mary and Fred; family histories of the Bell, Copeland, and Barge families written by Fred; funeral service papers; and a recorded interview. Includes photographs of the family, farm, agriculture students, and views of Saskatchewan and Alberta.
