Erin Claire Mouré was born in Calgary April 17, 1955. She attended classes at the University of Calgary (1972-1973) and the University of British Columbia (1974-1975) but did not complete degrees; she later received an Honorary Doctorate in Literature from Brandon University in 2008 for her contributions to Canadian poet. Mouré was hired by VIA Rail in 1976, and eventually moved from Vancouver to Montreal. Her position upon retirement in 1996 was Senior Officer, Customer Relations and Employee Communication (1989-1996). During her time with VIA Rail, Mouré was instrumental in the development of several projects related to customer reations, employee relations and productivity initiatives including an employee recognition program. Mouré states that the records relating to her work with VIA Rail are "linked with my poetry and thinking in many ways, and open to research that links the literary creativity with creativity in the business realm." Mouré is a prolific writer; her first book of poetry, Empire, York Street, was published in 1979 and was shortlisted for the Governor General's Award for Poetry. She is also a celebrated translator of poetry collections from Spanish, Portuguese, Galician and French. Mouré frequently writes under the Galician spelling of her name (Eirin Moure), the Spanish spelling (Erín Moure), and also as Elisa Sampredin. Recognition for Mouré's work is wide-ranging and includes the Governor General's Literary Award for Poetry (1988, Furious), finalist for the same award (1979, Empire, York Street; 1996, Search Procedures; 2002, O Cidadán; 2005, Little Theatres) and finalist for the Governor General's Award for Translation (2007 with Robert Majzels for Notebook of Roses and Civilization by Nicole Brossard). Mouré has also been awarded the QSPELL Award for Poetry (1990, WSW) and been the finalist 4 other times. She has also been recognized with the Pat Lowther Memorial Award (1986, Domestic Fuel), the A.M. Klein Award for Poetry (2005, Little Theatres), and was one of the "The Globe 100" best books of 2005 for Little Theatres.
