Biographical history
Florence Eleanor McMurtry, 1903-1979, was born in Michigan, USA. Her family moved to Alberta in 1907, settling in the Olds area. She attended Normal School in Calgary, 1921-1922, and began a long career as a teacher. She taught near Sundre for a year, in California for four years, then in Red Deer from 1928 to 1942. She then accepted a teaching position in Calgary. She studied at the University of Alberta, 1947-1949, and obtained her BA.
From 1950 to 1956 she taught at the Demonstration School in Calgary. She spent her summers studying at the University of California at Berkeley, and received her MA in 1955. She taught RCAF children in Germany, 1957-1959. She returned to Calgary and became the vice-principal at Cambrian Heights School, 1959-1964, and later at Haysboro School, 1965-1968. After her retirement in 1968 she spent several years as a volunteer at Shaughnessy School, teaching Stoney children. She was active in the Girl Guides Association for over 35 years.

The fonds consists of correspondence, certificates, teaching notes, inspectors' reports, articles, speeches, MA thesis (on spelling), Stoney language course recording and workbook, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and photographs of schools, teachers and students.
