Scope and content
Sub-series consists of 231 original architectural drawings and 66 reproductions, of which 43 are hand coloured, documenting Richard Hunter’s architectural and conceptual design projects from 1958 to 2015. The architectural drawings consist of both conceptual design projects and proposed and built projects. The conceptual projects primarily consist of sketches, presentation drawings, and hand coloured reprographic copies of sketches and presentation drawings. The conceptual projects include Agri Sonora II, cabins and tundra houses in Alaska, Arborean (I, II, IV, and V), Cliff Cities for Big Sur, Climax Arch I and II, Daucus Carota - Little Town on the Prairie, Drifting Dharmas, Forest House, Kyoto Thatched House, Mekong River, Nanopolis I and II, Somewhere I (For Samuel Beckett), Teach a Lizard to Laugh! (Seascape, Edward Albee), and Tripod Mojave. The proposed and built projects include drawings documenting the preliminary design process including sketches, conceptual drawings, development drawings, and perspectives, as well as a smaller number of construction or working drawings. There are over 25 of Hunter’s proposed or built projects for residences located in Victoria and the Pacific Coast area documented in the series, including Cook Residence, House for Jean-Louis Denux, House for Margaret Haines, Hunter Residence, House Addition for Jim & Phillippa Kerr, Killam Residence, Martin Residence, Pumple House, Rankin Residence, The Rose Residence, House Additions for Ian Ross, Garden for Mr. & Mrs. Ken Sebryk, Sievert Residence, and Young Residence. Other projects outside of the Victoria area include Intermediate Care Home (Terrace, B.C.), Monastery for Jemez Bodhi Mandala (Jemez Springs, N.M.), Mt. Baldy Zen Centre and Bathhouse (Mount Baldy, Calif.), House for Deborah Pomeroy (Fairbanks, Alaska), Rabinowitz Residence (Fairbanks, Alaska), House and Garden for Sasaki Roshi (Mount Baldy, Calif.), Studio for Radha Sloss (Santa Barbara, Calif.), Tor Aurora: House for Richard & Frances Hunter (Fairbanks, Alaska), and House and Garden for Motozo and Haruko Torii (Kyoto, Japan).
