Scope and content

Series consists of architectural drawings, photographs, textual records, and panels documenting Richard Hunter’s architectural and design projects. The series primarily consists of architectural drawings for Hunter’s conceptual design projects and his proposed and built projects. The conceptual projects are largely hand coloured reproductions of sketches and presentation drawings. Among the conceptual projects are Agri Sonora II, Arborean (I, II, IV, and V), Cliff Cities for Big Sur, Climax Arch I and II, Daucus Carota, Drifting Dharmas, Nanopolis I and II, Somewhere I (For Samuel Beckett), Teach a Lizard to Laugh! (Seascape, Edward Albee), and Tripod Mojave. The proposed and built projects include drawings largely documenting the early stages of the design process including sketches, conceptual drawings, development drawings, and perspectives, but the major projects also include working drawings. There are over 25 of Hunter’s proposed or built projects, including Cook Residence, House for Jean-Louis Denux, House for Margaret Haines, Hunter Residence, Intermediate Care Home (Terrace, B.C.), Killam Residence, Martin Residence, Mt. Baldy Zen Centre and Bathhouse, Rabinowitz Residence (Fairbanks, Alaska), Rankin Residence, Sievert Residence, and Studio for Radha Sloss (Santa Barbara, Calif.). There are a small number of photographs in the series, which document the projects Hunter Residence, Pavilion for Richard Hunter, Rankin Residence, Sievert Residence, and Proposals for Sculpture. There are two sets of 3 panels for the projects Hunter Residence and Killam Residence, along with a three textual files documenting three projects: the Happy Valley Foundation Village in Ojai, California, the Kelowna Airport Atrium Public Art submission, and the Mount Colnett Villa for the Tofino Senior Citizens Housing Society. The series is arranged in four sub-series: 1. Drawings; 2. Files; 3. Photographs; and 4. Panels. The files in each subseries are arranged alphabetically by project.
