Biographical history

Peter G. Glockner was born January 26, 1929 in Moragy, Tolna M., Hungary. The family immigrated to Canada in 1949, settling in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He received his Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering (Honours) from McGill University (1955), M.Sc. in Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering specialty) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (1956), and his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1964).

Glockner started his career at the University of Alberta in 1958 as Assistant Professor of Applied Mechanics in Civil Engineering. At his request he was transferred to the University of Alberta, Calgary campus in 1960, becoming a founding member of the Faculty of Engineering. Through-out his career he has served as Assistant Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies (1965), Acting Head, Department of Civil Engineering (1971-1972), and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering (1976-1987). Glockner became Professor of Civil Engineering in 1968, and Professor of Mechanical Engineering in 1976. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1994. In 1999, Glockner received the "Distinguished Lifetime Leadership Award" of the Faculty of Engineering, and the Order of the University of Calgary in 2003.

Glockner's academic career was highlighted with the publication of 7 books, over 100 national and international lectures or lecture series, and over 300 scientific papers. His areas of expertise were fundamental and applied studies on solid mechanics topics such as the behaviour of shells and inflatables, creeping stability and constitutive modeling of nonlinear time-dependent materials including ice. Glockner also wrote "A Place of Ingenuity," a history of the Faculty of Engineering in 1994. Glockner was honoured in 1994 with a special international conference on "A World of Shells."
