Biographical history
David Lander, 1912-1993, was born in Russia of Jewish parents. The family emigrated to Winnipeg in 1922 and moved to Alberta ten years later. David studied medicine at the University of Alberta, graduating as a doctor in 1936. He began a general practice at Black Diamond, Alberta the following year, serving that town and Turner Valley. He gained a national reputation as a physician who treated the whole person rather than just a disease. In 1954 he was a founder of the Alberta Division of the Canadian Mental Health Association. He has received many awards for his work including the National Mental Health Association Award in 1957, the Outstanding Achievement Award of the Alberta Medical Alumni Association of the U of A in 1970, an honorary doctorate from the University of Calgary in 1978, the Sir Frederick Haultain prize in 1983, and the Order of Canada in 1991. The David Lander Centre for the treatment of alcoholism and drug abuse, located in Claresholm, Alberta, is named in his honour. For further information see "Dr. Dave Lander" in Alberta Originals : Stories of Albertans who made a Difference / Brian Brennan. - Calgary : Fifth House, 2001, p. 136-139.
