Administrative history
The Dancers’ Studio West society was established in 1980 by Elaine Bowman and Peter Hoff to develop contemporary dance in Calgary. Bowman was the founding director and established the Alberta Dance Explosions dance festival and the Young Artist in Residence Program. The society was the only contemporary dance presenter in Calgary for many years, and one of a very few in Alberta.
Subsequent artistic directors were Michèle Moss (2000-2005), Brian Hansen (2007-2008), Davida Monk (2008-2018), Sasha Ivanochko (2018-2021), and Rufi Oswaldo (2021- ).
By 2008, contemporary dance in Alberta had begun to diversify with the emergence of other dance companies and presenters. In response, Dancers’ Studio West changed its focus from the presentation of dance companies to a range of professional development, apprenticeship, and choreographic residency programs.
