Biographical history
David Mowbray Soole, 1885-1959, was born in Reading, England, and emigrated to Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan in 1901. In 1903 he joined the Royal North-West Mounted Police (RNWMP) at Regina and was posted to Banff where he served until his discharge in 1905 due to tuberculosis. He recuperated in England and returned to Banff in 1907.
He was postmaster at Bankhead until 1913 when he moved to Banff to establish a real estate and insurance business. He sold the business in 1919 and bought the Homestead Hotel in Banff which he operated until 1945. He was instrumental in the foundation of the Banff Advisory Council and was president in 1937. He retired to Calgary, Alberta. He and his wife, Violet, had a daughter, Ivy (Bond), and a son, E.A. Soole.

The fonds consists of recorded interview by Ken Liddell for CBC with D.M. Soole about his experiences in Bankhead, Silver City and Anthracite (1953) and article based on it; photographs of Banff area (ca. 1910, nd), D.M. Soole (ca. 1910, ca. 1950), and RNWMP veterans (1946); scrapbook of predominantly Eye Opener articles (ca. 1905); D.M. Soole's letters to the editor about Banff (1937); paper about the founding of Banff National Park by A.G. Fulmer (1964); and miscellaneous newsclippings and poems given out at Homestead Hotel.
