        History

William Brown, ca. 1840-1921, was born in Scotland, and was in charge of breeding livestock on a number of estates before emigrating to Queenstown, Alberta in 1889 with his family. In 1869 he married Susan Aymer, 1849-[after 1932], and they had eight children including Willie, David, Eliza Jane (Wilson), Susan, Veenie and Austin. The family was sponsored by the British-owned Canadian Pacific Colonization Company and had a homestead on the south side of the Blackfoot (Siksika) reserve at Gleichen. It was adjacent to the company's ranch. William soon became Manager of Ranche and Lands for the company, but within the year the company went into receivership. William was appointed manager of the ranch until it was disposed of ca. 1893. William continued to ranch his own land, the Arbuthnott Ranche.
