Biographical history
Beta Sigma Phi is an international women's friendship network consisting of women of all ages, interests, and educational and economic backgrounds. It is the largest organization of this kind in the world and is known as "The Friendship Organization". The organization is dedicated to giving woman the opportunity to grow in both mind and spirit. Beta Sigma Phi's purpose is threefold - social, cultural and service. The Greek letters of its name represent Life, Learning and Friendship, which is the motto. The first chapter was established in Calgary in 1938 and by 2016 fifty chapters had been founded including Alpha Chapter (established 1938), Xi Zeta Chapter (established 1953), Xi Beta Chapter (established 2001), Laureate Beta (established 1974), Laureate Zeta (established 1979), Laureate Omega (established 2005), Alpha Zeta (active 1972-2006), Omicron (active 1949-2000), Eta (active 1945-1990), Alpha Kappa (active 1974-1985), Theta (active 1945-2000), Delta (active 1942-1998), Xi Omicron (active 1967-2010), Xi Kappa (active 1957-2014), Preceptor Iota (active 1970-2009), Preceptor Beta (active 1963-2009), Laureate Iota (active 1983-2009), Iota Master (active 1998-2013), and Theta Master (active 1995-2013).
