Biographical history

Archibald Frederic Key, 1894-1986, was born in England and emigrated to Canada in 1922. He married Lillian Moody in 1920 and they had one son, Chapin, 1922-2014. Between 1925 and 1940 he edited newspapers in Timmins, Ontario and Drumheller, Alberta. He served in the Second World War as an instructor. After the war he became director at the Calgary Allied Arts Centre where he served until 1964. From 1965 to 1968 he was director of the Canadian Museums Association after which he wrote a history of Canadian Museums entitled Beyond Four Walls. In the 1960s and 1970s Key acted as a consultant to various arts organizations and at the same time worked on a variety of writing projects. He was awarded the Order of Canada and an honorary doctorate from the University of Calgary. In 1952 he married Marjorie Elaine Sidenius, 1914-1994. For further information see J. The fonds consists of records created by Dr. Key during the last ten years of his life while engaged in writing his memoirs, and about William Aberhart; copies of his Drumheller Mail column; records of his museum consulting practice; and photographs of early Calgary. Includes some original Max Bates sketches used to illustrate one of his stories.
