Biographical history

Annora Brown, 1899-1987, was born in Red Deer, Alberta and moved to Fort Macleod as a child. She taught school in Fort Macleod for four years. She then attended the Ontario College of Art in Toronto in the 1920s and graduated with honours. She taught art at Mount Royal College in Calgary from 1929-1931 and then did field work for the University of Alberta Extension Department in Fort Macleod. She gave art classes in Fort Macleod and was influential in starting the town's sketch club. She also taught summer sessions at the Banff School of Fine Arts from 1945 to 1950. She painted western Canadian themes, illustrated a number of books, and wrote articles on nature and Indian folklore. She published Old Man's Garden. - Toronto : J.M. Dent and Sons, 1955, and her autobiography Sketches from Life. - Edmonton : Hurtig Publishers, 1981. She moved to Sidney, British Columbia in 1965, and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lethbridge in 1971.
