Administrative history

The Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association had its origins in the Alberta and Eastern British Columbia Press Association, which was formed in 1904. In 1912 this organization affiliated with the Canadian Press Association. In 1920, when the CPA split into separate organizations for weeklies and dailies, the 94 Alberta weekly newspapers formed the Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association, Alberta Division. The present name was adopted in 1956.

AWNA acts largely as a lobby group to ensure favourable government legislation regarding newspapers and journalism. It has also helped raise the physical and editorial standards of Alberta's weeklies. Ken Patrige served as secretary and president of AWNA for many years.

For further information on the early history of the AWNA see The Story of Alberta Division, Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association / Leonard D'Albertanson. -- Wainwright : Wainwright Star-Chronicle, 1955.
