        History

On March 21, 1898, an Order-in-Council ordered a detachment of Canadian Army Permanent Force to be sent to Fort Selkirk, Yukon Territory. The Yukon Field Force was created to assist the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) in maintaining law and order in the Klondike and to act as a symbol of Canadian sovereignty in the face of American influence in the Yukon. The 200 member force was drawn primarily from the Royal Canadian Dragoons and the Royal Regiment of Canadian infantry. The Commanding Officer was Lt. Col. T.D.B. Evans. The force departed from Ottawa in 1898, picked up members in Winnipeg, went on to Vancouver, then travelled by ship to Wrangell, Alaska. From there the force went on to Glenora, British Columbia and Fort Selkirk. YFF built a garrison at Fort Selkirk and were withdrawn by 1900.
