Biographical history

William Rowan, 1892-1957, was born in England. He moved to Alberta in 1920 when he was invited to organize and head the Zoology Department at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He remained with the department for nearly 37 years. He received world-wide recognition as an ornithologist in the 1920s for his work on bird migrations. In 1936 he won the Carnegie Foundation award and in 1946 was presented the Flavelle Medal by the Royal Society of Canada. He was also an accomplished artist, illustrator and sculptor, especially of animals and birds. He and his wife, Reta, 1895-1983, had five children, Mrs. G. McPhee, Mrs. R. Bentley, Mrs. F.
