The Canadian Department of Militia and Defence was created in 1868 through the Militia Act. It oversaw Canada's military activity until 1922 when it was absorbed the new department of National Defence.

Biographical history
William Melvin Norman Ramsay was born in Queensland, Australia in 1899. His family emigrated to Canada when Ramsay was a child and they settled in Vancouver, British Columbia. During WWI Ramsay volunteered for the Canadian Expeditionary Force, serving from April 1917 until the end of the war. He died in Abbotsford, British Columbia.
