History
Peter W. Toews, 1866-1935, was born into a Mennonite family in Friedrickthal, Russia. He emigrated to Canada in 1874 with his family, and they settled near Winnipeg. In 1888 he married Anna Broeszky, ?-1901, also from Russia, and they had seven children, three of whom survived childhood. In 1892 he established a blacksmith shop in Steinbach, Manitoba. After his first wife's death he married Anna Kaegi Unruh, ?-1923, a widow from Oregon, USA. They had five children. The family moved to Swalwell, Alberta where Peter ran a coal hauling business and worked as a blacksmith. He took several trips to the Peace River country. After Anna's death he married Mary Koehn of Oklahoma, and they had three children.
